I was just riding home and my gear lever stopped returning to the 'home' position after each gear change. I can change gears, but have to physically push it back to the normal position after each change.

It's an RVF400 . . .

I've not had this problem before and I've got a long journey on Friday!!

Any ideas?

Remove the gear lever, see if it pivots cleanly, if not (tbh even if it is!) clean it up and lube it with some grease.
Check the rose joints all pivot freely, lube/replace if needed.

If the gear lever and rose joints are free then it's most likely the return spring, that requires opening up the engine just a little but isn't an engine out job.

Odds are it's just the gear lever has seized, happened to me a few times on different bikes.

Ideally some spray 3-in-1 would be better but should do as a quick fix, WD40 is not actually lube and so it would need doing properly sometime.

I have a can of generic 'spray grease', that maybe good for the job I guess!

Might want to use the WD40 to wash it out a bit first then use the spray grease.
