Well i was looking over my bike today and the tops of the forks caught my eye. They had... well dust caps i suppose lol... on top.
I un-screwed it and found a valve (same as you would find in a tyre).

So presumably these forks have compressed air in them.

What i can't figure out is why?? I thought they were hydraulic?

same as on my NC24 they are oil,spring an air
an still tryin to find out wat psi/bar to pump my forks up to after wondering what happened when i pushed the valve rofl

Thats a good point, what psi should they be pumped to. So i can check mine...

Haynes says 0-5.5 psi
In a highly technical maner... ...ive discovered two full strokes of a wee hand bike tyre pump brings the forks up to 5 psi, feels much better than 0 psi on the standard springs.

Also why is there such a range that you could set the forks at? Surely there must be a specific psi that the forks had in them when they left the factory?

From what Ive heard some of the chaps on here have installed the NC29 fork tops on the NC23's forks. No idea if those on ebay fit, but its blue anodised , would set the the yellow in my bike off lovely lolol

As regards to pressure Ive no idea what they are meant to be set to, Id guess just to suit riders weight/style/taste but obv we are (im assuming) a fair bit heavier than the wee japanese chaps that the bike was designed for

Also, to any of the racer chaps mainly id guess, any benefit to moving to the mechanical preload adjusters?

What year models did the NC23 Tri-Arm's have air forks?

Are these forks good for use on a race bike?

As far as I know all models of Tri Arm had these type of forks. Somewhere on here I remember someone saying that the Tri Arm forks were superior to the NC29 ones because they had better internal dampening (I think) And were a good upgrade for a race bike when combined with NC30 fork tops :)

The forks are actually Tri Arm - slightly longer than the NC29 hence the tube above the top yoke - we use these for several reasons - they have better std. damping characteristics than the NC29 - are cheaper to buy and easier to locate second hand - and when fitted with Race Tech springs / Compression Emulator Gold valves and a set of NC30/29 preload adjusters - simply stunning front end control.

The above is a quote from Graeme France's NC29 race bike build thread....I think Graeme sells an upgrade kit for NC23 forks as well...I wouldn't bother with the tops from flebay I'd go to Graeme everytime...I've met him a couple of times now when I've picked bits up from him, and his knowledge is fantastic!...and all the stuff he puts on his race bikes works because of the hours and hours of testing he has done.

Racetech fork kit from GF and NC29/NC30 fork tops is what you want, no need for messing about with air pressures then.
