New toy.........

Hi all,

new to the site and new to the gsxr400. Short intro, my mate had this sat in his garage for 2 years and hasnt done any thing to it since he took the engine out... :whistle: So it has been relocated into my garage for me to have a play with.
Basically the drive shaft bearing has desintigrated with just the one ballbearing left in it. i here you say where have they gone, prob in to the gear box somewhere, :o ,
So i hope some of the eKnowledge on this site will get me on my way to putting it back on the road
Where to get some sort of manul,
Has anybody replaced one of these bearing, and the best way to go about it, pros and cons
i am hopping that the bearing havent chewed everything up
let the funn begin :grin:................and lots of f.ing and swearing :x :x

Hi Mark,
The manual link is down but you can sign onto the banditalley.net site and download a manual for the gk73A, its not the same motor as yours but is close enough for what you need to do. The bearing will not just pul out of the casing as it uses c-rings and a pin to hold it in but you can get away with a part split. If you strip out the right side of the motor and then flip the motor upside down you can take out the sump and then drop off the bottom casing leaving the head, barrel and crank still in. There are afew parts that are held in by the casings being joined and these could be lost/forgotten but if you are carefull it is not too difficult. All the best and i think the bike will build up to look very nice so good on ya for not braking it. Just shout if ya need any help. Where you at?

and cheers for the advise, will look at the banditalley site to try and find the manual. Will be a challange to sort out but will pass a bit of time. am sure i will be asking questions as i go along, will post more pics as i do things, i'm in northdevon.

Seems to be a lot of Suzi owners in Devon. With the motor already out it should only take about 3hrs to do the rebuild. You will need a holder/ puller for the flywheel, i made my own out of some 10mm plate and a lenght of 1" bar.

em 3hrs :pray: :pray: having never split an engine that far 3 hrs might be a bit optamistic, shall see :grin:
wont be for a few weeks yet.
was looking on the banditalley site for the manuals but couldnt find any ?? will have to look harder lol

Ye the manual is for a 73A but will do for what your at. You can leave the pick up rotor on the left side of the crank and only remove the flywheel on the rgt side, remove all the right side components, clutch etc and make a note of where the copper washers go as you remove engine pins or you will get oil leaks on rebuilding. Leave the crank held in by the cam chain tension but watch you dont lose the two rubber plugs that hold the cam chain guide, swop out the bearing and use some good qulity non drying sealant on rbuild, DONT use that blue shit that will go into the oil feeds and reck the motor. Oh and watch them countersunk screws that are behind the clucth as they are made of cheese!

Has been a while but have now replaced the bearing and in the process of rebuilding,
Had a bitch of a job getting the generator fly wheel of, had to make a puller plate up and a 10 ton puller to free the bloody thing.

so having done that wass able to split the engine down to inspect the inners. The sump was full of small metal filings, must have been from bearing casing just shreaded up.

all the piston bores looked sound with surface marks so it looks like none of the shit got into the top end of the engine, as they do have a very fine mesh filter on the oil pick up. The only visable damage was to the casing by the drive shaft bearing where it had ecessive play and it bounced against the casing and cracked it. on rebuild i have thrown some JB weld around it, doesnt look prity but it will do

so the carbs a re of so i will split them down and replace all the o rings while they are off ( so of to pm chris for o ring set )

Hey Badger,

Get in touch with Stripes as wel, he's in South Devon and seems to know pretty much everything there is to know about these bikes. Between him and Variable valves I think there is nothing that can't be done/sorted!!!!

Good luck with the rebuild!
