Hybrid gearing

What's the lowast gear ratio you can get for the 600 hybrid?

My bike's now only for the track, so I'm going to gear it to suit as it's geared for about 165mph (I think it's 14/45 at the moment), which was fine for lazy revving on the road but is to wide for the track.

at Oulton I was only getting to about 120, so if I can get something like 13/48 without rubbing the swingarm then that would be helpful.

Generally ... so not model specific

One down on the front is ok, (if you go anymore you can put strain on the chain where it has to change direction)

Going up on the back gives a bigger sproket so the chain will be a bit wider from the swingarm there ... as it's a track bike I imagine the front sproket's cut down, or will be so the chain won't catch it.

You'll probably need an extra couple of links in the chain.
You might want to shift your weight a bit more forward when you crack the throttle open too ;)

my road hybrid runs 14/47 and the track one 15/47.the road ones a bit wheelie prone and tops out about 145ish but the 15/47 on the track one is just about right.the t/cat has a 15/47 as standard.though in reality i would have thought 16/47 would be about right as the t/cat is a lardy old bus weighing in at around 220 kilos so with a weight saving of about 40 kilos or thereabouts it should pull it without a problem and have a much better top speed.on the minus side both gearing options give the chain guide rubbers a hard time.

That's interesting. I thought mine was overgeared becuase I top out at about 145 as well and that's in 5th, so I feel that 6th gear is just unused on the track. In fact, I don't think I went into 5th at all at a wet Oulton as it was time to brake by the time I saw 110-115. It was almost like riding a twist & go as I think I only used 3rd & 4th, although I should have used 2nd in the chicaines and at shell hairpin as I got not a lot of drive on the exit until it got above 7K

The spare bike I bought for spares has 15/47 on 520 chain, so I might just straight fit that when I get some time or try it with a 14 front. I'm at Oulton again on 19th Dec if the fog & temperature lifts enough to get any running, although I'll be taking it easy as 2 crashes on 2 consecutive days will not improve my standing with the wife.

You should be fine with 14-47 both my hybrids run this , on my f400 race bike i had to go to 14-48 to get the drive as i'd been on a see food diet --- see food and eat it . I would have thought you should ever be below 7k on the track anyway you have to ride these things like 2 strokes LOL
hope you recover from your spill

I'm fine really

I think part of the problem is I need to drop into 2nd into shell hairpin, the 2 chicaines and Lodge, not 3rd like I had been doing and using 3rd at Old Hall instead of staying in 4th. Out of all of those corners I've been waiting for the drive to kick in.

Gear selection is my thing to work on this saturday as I've been lazy with the box in my last 2 trackdays (first ever 2 btw) and I've discovered the limit of what I can do under braking (the hard way :o ).

Carrying corner speed is the secret for sure , my buddy could lap faster than me on my bike with the 15-47 than i could as he could keep the corner speed up a few of the corners i had to drop a gear lower than him to get the same drive thats why i dropped one tooth on the front and took a couple of secs of my times almost right away . Do you tyre warmers in this weather and what tyres are you running ..

Last time out I was running race wets. Bridgestone YEK rear and a Dunlop KR222 front. The Dunlop did not give very good confidence as I lost the front a few times through the day, so I think I reached the limit on how much corner speed I could carry. As I crashed on it later in the day, it's been taken off. I now have a Bridgestone YEK front race wet fitted, which I hope will be a lot better. Forecast for 19th at Oulton is -1°C, so the track will be damp and salted and presumably slippy.

Remember that I'm just doing trackdays for a laugh in the winter, so have not got all the gear and have no intention on spending another £200 on decent warmers just yet. I did a dry day at the end of October and was on my road tyres without warmers (Avon viper supersport), which were absolutely fine for my first trackday. I know some TDOs say warm your tyres for 3 laps but with a fast road tyre and not a track tyre, I'm happy to do a 80-90% lap and carry on as normal.
