hi everyone, got a brand new problem with the bike.. its a gk71f '87 gsxr 400, and it seems to be overcharging the battery.. so im guessing this means the regulator/rectifier is fu*ked ??? the problem with this is, i cant find anything anywhere! plenty of them around for the newer 400's, but i cant find any for my model.. can anyone help ? thanks

If it is the same as the later GSXR400, 3 wires from generator (usually yellow) and 2 wires to battery then any REG/REC from a bike of 400cc up with the same 3 in 2 out setup should be useable if you dont mind changing the connectors and it maybe not mounting the same as original. For example my CLR125 has the REG/REC from a GSXR600 shoved under the seat not even getting the slightest bit warm with Zenon headlights and heated handle bar grips!

thanks for the reply ! ive just taken off all the fairing and had another look, upon closer inspection i found that one of the red wires was corroded all the way through, due to a bad home made connection.. (previous owner ?!)

could that be the cause of my problem ?? thanks

That would certainly be a good place to start looking lol. See if you can bypass the damage and see if the battery is being charged ok then (somewhere between 13-15V ish with the engine running, much more would be why the battery is boiling)

right , i just fixed the wiring on the regulator, went to start the bike (bareing in mind its been sat for about 3 weeks),

and it wont run !1111

i eventually got it to start after about 5 mins of literally holding the start button, it would be on the edge of running, i could hear it detonating, it eventually ran but cut out straight away, did this a few times with a massive back fire, and quite a bit of smoke, which smelt alot like unburnt fuel, then wouldnt start atall, so i took the plugs out, cooked them on the stove as they were all black, popped them back in, and it eventually started, ran rough as shite then cut out again because of a lack of fuel (took the tank off to get at the plugs, didnt put it back on)

is this normal for a bike to behave this way, bareing in mind i leave it outside overnight?

im going to try and get the bike running tomorow, but if anyone has experienced this problem before ... let me know

, just cleaned the carb, there was quite abit of shite in the float bowls, and some of the pilot jets seemed to be blocked, cleaned them all up, put the carb back on...

now it just backfires when i try and start it..

any help would be apreciated

I would check the ht leads haven't ended up on the wrong cylinders ie it might be sparking on the exhaust stroke. I have done this myself.

They can make you a new one at a good price with extra long leads to mount it under the head stock. it needs plenty of cool air or it will overheat and boil batteries. Before i relocated mine i had 4 Rectifiers and 7 batteries. Now all good no probs

If you can't make it out in the crap piccy it's an old PC fan screwed to the reg/rec which I wired up to the lighting circuit so it comes on with the ignition (well ok when I have the lights on, which is always...)
