Martins Valve Clearances!

Post by Marty_rillo »

Hi guys just cheked the valve clearances this night,
Inlets are off, nearly all the inlets are at 0.5 or 0.00. not good
Exhaust are all arond the 0.35 to0.45 mark. Again off.
Cheked over the manual, and it looks like i will need to buy replacement shims then,
Are all the intake shims the same?
Also are all the exhaust the same?
Or just to make sure should i have a look under the buckets to see if its been done before?
it looked as if it had never been done,
Also with these figures it would be enough to make it run quite rough?
Cheers martin

0.00 will make it not run at all !!!

If the cams are in constant contact with the followers then the valves aren't closing so there's no compression.

The shims are interchangable between inlet and exhaust, so note the gaps on a sheet of paper, then lift the cam and note the shim size (marked on the shim) then you can juggle the shim positions to get back within the tollerance.

Get a telescopic magnet and then no problems.

Cam chains are easy to find... Just don't drop a shim down there

Inlets 0.11-0.2mm
Exhausts 0.21-0.3mm

You can swap some shims but inevitably have to replace about half.

Unusual to have wide clearances unless a muppet did them last time. Closing inlets is normal and indicative that the shim service is overdue. It will run but can be difficult to start.

Marty are you sure that the inlet clearance isn't 0.05 as 0.5 sounds very big!

£300 +
The cost goes down a lot if the engine's out the bike

Hi there guys, shimming the clearances doesnt look like it will fix the starting,
Looks like the inlet valves are a little worn down and not sealing too well.
Head is off and replacement ones being fired in next week when they arrive, also the valve stem seals and gaskets,
Its getting to be a bit of a job!
Any one else had to do this to thier engine?

martin, its not so much as a big job but you will need a valve-spring compressor to get the valves out, just use some smooth grinding paste when seating the new valves in & make sure you wash the head out from all the grinding paste, then i do a leak down test & leave it over night to see which ones leak, i check mine twice a year as its a race motor & keeps it strong.

THats great info! I have a friend at a garage who is comoing to lend a hand witha spring compressor,
I have been informed by larger exup owners that this is common fault for the inlets, something to do with the unleaded addatives and the metal used? not sure on the details but mathew has rep[laced tham on 1000 exup!
So should be fairly smooth, The gaskets cost a bit though!
Cheers martin
