Help needed in Deepest Darkest Devon

Post by Daveyboy »

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, and FZR400's (more used to strokers). I've recently bought a 3TJ and was just wondering if there's anyone on here who lives in the south devon area who would be able to give me a few pointers  ?

TIA

P.S. Fantastic website

Well to be honest, I'm a typical accountant - you give me a list of instructions and I can do the job over and over again, but without those instructions I don't have a lot of confidence. Here goes. The bike has been stood for the last 8 years in a shed, so I've changed the oil, filters, new battery, drained the tank, put some fresh petrol in and started it up, very easily  . Problem is, it runs fine on choke, but as soon as it's warmed up, take the choke off at it stalls. Simple me thinks, just adjust the tick over. Got it ticking over at about 1,200. When back the next day and wouldn't start as it's flooded, turned the tickover back, it starts but won't idle. I think that it might be the carb inlet rubbers but haven't checked these yet - this is my first stupid question - how do you remove the carbs? I've had the tank and airbox off and had a quick lok at the carbs, but with light going fast & no manual (I downloaded the 3TJ one, but image quality isn't that great), I decided to post this and make myself look a complete idiot

Sorry for such a basic questions guys

there are rubbers underneath each carb, you need to undo the clamps around the rubbers at the bottom of the carbs, usually cross head bolts but could be anything! then i find pushing down and towards the back of the bike releases them in a more controlled way than yanking upwards!

By the sound of it the carbs and jets need a good clean. They can gum up if left for an extended period of not running.
If you could get the bike to run you could add some carb cleaner to the petrol but it sounds more servere and i thinks the carbs need to come off for a thorough clean up.
May sound a bit daunting if your delving into the unknown. Once you have removed the carbs remove the float bowls (1 at a time so if you get stuck you can compare) then give it a good clean out. Be sure to remove the jets to remove any crud from in them.
Hopefully should make the world of difference.

Yup - the job sounds difficult but isn't really and there are 2 ways to do it.

Take the carbs off (as Taggy suggested) and then take the throttle cables off.
Use a big sheet of white paper so you can find any small pieces if you drop them.
Use some penetrating oil on the float screws and check the screw bit fits the heads - don't use a screw driver, a 1/4" ratchet and screw driver bit. Push down hard on the screw and steadily increase the pressure on the ratchet ... machine head screws can round out easily.
Take the float bowl off and use carb cleaner to clean the insides.
Now take the (black) carb top off - there's a weakish spring under it - and remove the diaphram with the plunger and needle. Check the diaphram isn't broken or has a pinhole - spray some cleaner on it and a hole will go dry before the rest.
Back down the bottom take the brass jets out and try to look through them, use the carb cleaner to flush them through, and replace them one by one.
Clean the body of the carb, and reasemble - have a look at the float bowl rubbers, if the carbs leak petrol then these can be to blame it will hard to get the bike idling properly too.
Finally when your finished clean the outside of the carb banks with some petrol and a small paint brush. When you put them back on the bike remember to attach the throttle cables before putting them on.

or

Send them to be ultrasonically cleaned http://www.jrs.uk.com/Site/JRS_Home.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cheers guys, will give it a go on the weekend and let you know. Thanks for all of your help :worthy: , as you can probably guess, no doubt I'll be back picking your brains shortly. I promise I won't ask which way I need to turn a bolt to undo it  !!!

Right guys, left work early tonight and had a spare 1/2 hour, so took the carbs off, and I haven't had chance to clean them yet, but the rubbers between carb and block are totally shot, cracked all over. Has anyone got any they're willing to sell? Also, I need one of the "slide bolt pins" for the back caliper (the ones that hold the pads in place).

Cheers

why not get in touch with Yamaha and see if you can get original rubbers.

The pins can either be bought new or got to probolt and see if they do some posh ones
