New parts can be had from Yamaha - try Fowlers in Bristol but you'll need to tell them the frame number first (it's also in the V5).

Manuals can be downloaded - the links are in the FZR General section

It could be the chain tensioner.

Thanks so much for the info was beginning to think i had bought a banger with no available parts!
got the tensioner on its way now.
Also the repair manual is going to be used a lot on this bike by the sounds of it so thanks for the links to the down loads!
cheers

Hi there Mr chicken!
Well i Am really new to forums too so i may take some time to get used to you guys!
I bought an fzr400rr3tj1 its a 1990 model, it was white, but some doughhead has painted it gaulosios blue and in a rossi rep
style, just got her two days ago so got plugs and put the battery on charge, and fired it up, it did start but pretty rough,
Was going to empty tank and fill it with fresh fuel but not got fuel yet, the cam chain is sounding loose, lots of ticking from the top and at idle, from the engine, the valve clearances will definately need checked.
I also gave it a run along the drive but it really didint like moving, it seemed to bog and want to stall.
Also the battery was draining really quickly, i think it may need replaced too!
Its quite a list of things to do but if you have any suggestions on what to start with then i would be more than happy!
thanks for helping and expect a lot more questions soon!
Oh heres one, how come the engine on the v5 says1wg but there is a model called that too?
Confusing when you are looking at parts!
thanks
Martin

There are a few models which are 1WG ... the engines look a bit like the FZR600 3HE with 3 fins on the head.

All the FZR400 engines have the 1WG mark on, even the 3TJ's

Hi Marty. When i bought my 3tj it was in similar fettle. I found it was a bit reluctant to start and the battery also kept draining. I found the rectifier was the reason for the battery drain ( easily checked by unplugging it) and all the valve clearances needed doing. Be sure to check the exup valve for free movement as this usually causes the slugish pick up of the engine.
My bike now has 50k on board and runs sweet.

the cam chain adjuster might just need a helping hand to click over to the next tooth, carefully remove the bolt on the back and give the adjuster a gentle push with a screw driver as it's idling dont go mad but it should just help it to tighten up properly. if it doesnt it might be at the end of its adjustment and a new chain will be needed!

thanks guys! its a glorious sunday morn and im going to check the very things you say!
the manual that i have down loaded isnt the clearest so i hope i do it right!
The exup valve, is it prone to failing at the servo or at the valve itself, it seemed to move when i turned it by hand but there is quite a bit of play in the cables,
do the valve clearences go out by much?
the engine has done 38000ks on it so im assuming itshould do more!
Cheers martin

The EXUP - Check the cables are ok and not frayed at the exup end. Take off the cover and you'll see the pulley, it has two prongs on it, line them up with the hole at 3 o'clock on the housing and put a small bolt or something in to hold the pulley.
Now go up to the top by the servo and adjust the cables to take up the slack - these are finger tight only.
Do up the locknuts take out the screw from the exup pulley and turn on the ignition the bike should open and close the exup coming to rest with the prongs at the 3 o'clock.

That should make a difference to the bike
