I know i not got my 400 any more but you lot are such a helpful bunch when i did and i can only see if any one has any ideas here with my 600

ok this is gonna be a bit of a story but trying to explain the best i can...

I picked up a '97 SRAD the other week and when i got it the person b4 had adjusted the clutch so that you had to pull the clutch right in to the handle bar b4 it was disengage bute even then while held right in if you revved the bike u can feel the clutch plates slighty gripping and the bike wanting to creep forwards. so i adjusted the screw on the left hand side of the case that goes to the push rod and the to adjusters for the cable. while doing this job i found it hard to get it adjust properly it was like the slightist adjustment on the push rod was either to much or too little and even with adjust the cable adjusters too. but any way i finally sorta got to what i seemed was a good engage and disengage feel but when i took the bike out today i was riding along and opening the throttle quickly to see if there was any slip and to start it was ok but the all of a sudden the clutch started to slip so i closed the throttle and pulled the clutch in and after i released it again the clucth got stuck while it was disengaged ad the left and the cable went soft. i got the bike back into nutural and i was wondering what happen so i blipped the throttle hard a couple of times to see if i can hear any strange noises increasing with engine speed and all of a sudden the clucth snapped back to engaged and seem to be working again. didn't want to chance taking the bike out again as i want to seek help to find what could of caused this. also i noticed that the adjuster screw hat pushes onto the puch rod sticks out really far.

So if any can help out with any ideas that would be great

Thanks

sounds like a combination of knackered plates and a notched clutch basket.. but i could be wrong.

Nope, the big component above it, the basket is what you need to look at. The tags on the clutch plates will slide up and down the sides of the basket and if the tags on the plates are worn or burred over and the bits of the basket with which they engage are notched then you'll get the symptoms you describe.

If it's only slightly worn you may be able to temporarily clean the whole lot up with careful use of a fine file although from your description I'd say it sounds like the whole lot needs renewing.

went out 2day and fine adjusted the clutch. seems to be ok so far. must of been a badly adjusted clutch from the previous owner.
