Am i being a bit dim?!!

Post by griff488 »

Hello all!

I am trying to take the rear wheel off a 1wg FZR400 and the bloody spindle won't budge!!
I have undone the nut and chain tensioners and removed the chain. I have also removed the brake caliper.
Am i missing something? By my reckoning it should just slide out?!

Cheers Griff

your right it should,a gentle tap with rubber mallet may be in order- it may not have been greased the last time it was fitted.if youve not got a rubber mallet use a sturdy peice of wood against the spindle and tap it with a hammer.

Could it be the chain tensioners are pushing the spindle up against the back of the swingarm ???
It's a bit of a long shot though.

My fizzer has a axle nut and lock nut. Maybe someone could have swapped the nuts around and the locknut is still on?

If you're sure there's no nut left on the spindle then it's seized. Probably to an aluminium collar.

Applying heat to the collar will help. Working lube in there will also help but if it don;t move, you can't work anything in there.

(A fkin big hammer and some anger helps sometimes but usually causes lots of damage to the spindle... keep the nut on there and use a block of hard wood to reduce damage, also prop the other end of the swingarm against a wall, so you get the full whack and don't bend the arm)

The last time I had this it was a brake torque arm on a FZR1000 I bought to break for parts and I had to drill the torque arm collar so that I could get oil into the joint. I ended up drilling through the spindle as well as it's hard to judge but it came off.

Lesson: Lube your spindles

you could try getting a mate to stand over the bike holding the brake and giving the wheel a hefty kick forwards after loosening the adjusters tosee if that frees stuff up as they can, as evil says, drop back into the adjusters. my race bike is a git to get out if things arent lined up properly, as soon as everything is squared up out it comes easy as!

Give it a good dose of penetrating oil. Should have plenty of time to soak in before the weekend (be carefull of the brakes!).
Also a long shot but try knocking the spindle from the other side, i know it cant be removed through the wheel in that direction but if the spindle is siezed at that side the shock of hitting it may get things moving quicker. Worth a try!

Thought i'd just update everyone! I finally got the bugger out but it wasn't easy!! I ended up getting a mate to lean the bike over while i smacked it with a large copper mallet! It wouldn't shift so lay swingarm against wall and hit it harder and out she came! It was that lovely rust colour on the inside with no trace of grease at all!! Knackered the spindle but nevermind it had to come out!!

Thanks for all suggestions!

Griff
