Hey guys,

just took off the tank to get to my carbs but realized that I had a minor problem... I couldnt stop the fuel from coming out from the petcock...

so i'm just wondering.. when the tap is put to RESERVE and ON, the fuel is supposed to run, rite? now what if the tap is put to OFF, is the fuel supposed to completely stop coming out??

is this something that needs to be fix to avoid other problems, or is it normal and can i just leave it like that?? thx

KC

You will have had done to the tank what is commonly known as "the HRC fuel tap mod"

This is to remove the vacuum controlled flow by removing the diaphragm inside the tap.

You can replace the diaphragm with a tap rebuild kit or you can remember to turn it off..

The common consensus is to get it fixed unless you run a race bike.

Welcome to the site..

CMSMJ1, regardless of a modified HRC Spec Tap or not, when the dial is in the Off position, or the middle of the three, then fuel shouldnt be coming out of the tap.
It sounds to me as if the tap inside, where the ball bearing controls the fuel flow, is shafted and needs replacing.

There isnt anything else it can be TBH!!!

i got a good condition fuel tap for sale and could even sell you a kit to convert your fuel tap back to standard from HRC spec if it has indeed been modified

Personally on a road bike I'd remove the 'HRC' tap mod, just not worth it as this can happen.

With a standard tap you have almost two taps, one that is manual and one automatic, you need both to fail in the open position to get petrol passing through unwanted. With the HRC 'mod' you only have one tap that isn't designed to be used by itself and over time can develop a leak which can result in ruined engines.
