Alternator removal PLEASE HELP!

Hi, after testing my alternator with a multi meter, i was only getting 24-25 volts from each of the 3 wires.... resistance was high between 2 of them as well... so.... left hand casing off...a bit of oil came out ( is this normal!!!!!) any way i went to get the flywheel off ( at least i think its the flywheel?? round thing.... about 10cm in diameter and about 4cm deep like a small bowl??) and its beeing a bastard! i put the bike in gear and nearly knocked the bike off its stand as i attempted to get it off!

So, is the oil in this casing normal? or do i have a damaged seal? if it is normal does anyone know of a tip to get the fly wheel off so i can get to the stator behind it and get it changed quick sharp.

nc 24 by the way!

would really appreciate some help on this, as its my means of transport! :worthy:

Greetings!

a splash of oiul is normal matey - when you take the gubbins out you'll see the crankshaft through a little hole...

You need a bloody big bolt to screw into the flywheel that then pushes it off the crank. I cannot recall the size off the top of myhead but M20 x1.25 or M18 comes to mind.

Once you get the flywheel off, you'll see that the windings are knackered as if you have resistance you wil have some frazzled windings..

it is an easy, if knuckle scraping fix as you need to stop the engine turning over when you are cranking on this large nut - get a friend to sit on the bike in gear and on the brakes.

Or...make a little tool.
2 pieces of metal, about 18 inches long, bolt them together in the middle and then have 2 bolts at the end of each piece and place these into the 'bowl' and this stops it going round. The one I made sits nicely under the Abba stand connection and holds fast.
Mine is for the NC30 but should be ok on the 24?! (Not sure though) If you're local and would like to borrow it, let me know.

Thanks lads, i,ll have a crack at it in a second, i was a bit concerned about the oil! and having braught the bike as "a cheap run about" as my gpz500 was nicked 2 weeks ago i was pulling my hair out at having to buy a new reg/rec, battery and now stator or windings whatever is the correct term!
Hopefully it will be sweet as a nut after though! and as a bonus i get my cat c written off gpz back soon after the thieving scumbags crashed it! so that will be more spanner work! the joys of bike ownership!
I,ll give the suggestions a go in a second (whilst accompanied by my friend carling!) and let you know the outcome....
Once again thanks!

Right....... got a mate round to bring some pullers as the flywheel was very tight on the shaft.....got it off and the stator/windings (not sure of the correct name) were fine! well looked fine....mmmmmmmmmmmmmm what have i done wrong here then!!!???? :o

Reassembled, then tested volts from the 3 yellow wires from the alternator....at this point my mate (an electrical engineer) asked me why i was testing to earth......ahhhhhhh it seems i had read some dodgy info from 1 or 2 people on here ( i dont mean that in a bad way its just the truth!) that you had to go from the wire to earth, this isnt the case! the method i should have been using was testing 2 wires at a time, ie call each of the yellow wires a b c, 1 probe of the multi meter to a, the other to b, then a to c, then b to c....... there we have it!!! 50 volts from each of them!! woooohoooooo just saved myself £65!!! thats at least a nights drinking!

Any way knowing this was fine i then checked the (shitty old) battery, 12v exactly, not really good, it should really have been between 12.5v and 13.5v, so the battery is suspect, but next check the reg/rec, start the bike up 5-6k revs, volts rise from 12 to 13.5 and build up to 14, so the reg/rec was fine (after i,d just spent cash on a new one!!! DOH!!! less beer for mr twisted individual this month!!!)

Upon further inspection the battery wasnt even the right model for the nc24, so im guessing that it wasnt holding charge, or wasnt able to handle the stresses put on it, so my nice new properly coded (cbl9-b i think!!!) is now charging as we speak

So hopefully this will have it sorted! (he says hugging an oak tree, and grasping a rabbits foot!)
And i dont suppose anyone wants to put some pics up for me? i took some on my phone but dont really know how to get um on here, just of my nc-24 its partially streetfighterd, polished frame, 1 off colour, race can, twin spots, fly screen, if so lemme know i,ll send the pics via text to whoever has the know how!

Thanks people you are legends! :worthy:
