NC-24 alternator replacement please help!

Hi there, im new to the forum, but not new to bikes! Just braught an nc24 to get to work on etc after my other bike was stolen last week
Got it home..... went for 1 or 2 rides....was fine, then (you know whats coming!!!) pulled up stopped the bike, went to start it and it would only just turn over..... now having looked on this forum loads in the last day or 2, from what i can gather, when the reg/rec goes it cooks the battery.... my battery is not cooked, the bike was pulling 3-5 amps into the battery (as measured from the positive lead going to the battery whilst running at 5,000 rpm) after i started it with a booster pack, this is not ideal from what i can gather, a dead battery should pull lots of amps to try and recharge the battery ( i think?)
Any way ive got a second hand reg/rec just in case, and having looked under the tank, the F***ing idiot who sold me the bike had cut the connector block off the 3 yellow wires from the alternator into the reg/rec and just twisted them and put insulation tape over them, so allthough i dont mind changing it and getting the bodge sorted id rather just get it sorted so i can ride it to and from work! and get the rest done when i have time!!
But thinking about it...... the bodged wires could be the problem????
Ive also ordered a new battery which should be here on wednesday, right... im going off the point a bit but its all relevant!
Anyway.... im not electrically minded (allthough work with a few electrical engineers, but not bike mechanics!) but from what i can gather i think my alternator is fooked, ive found one from a site called LMspares for £65..... does anyone have any experience of changing the alternator windings? is it a hard process? i assume the casing comes off the left hand side of the bike etc... other than that i know nothing of changing them!
Sorry to rant on, but id love to hear if anyone has any opinion on if its actually the alternator, and also how to change the alternator windings!
Thanks in advance!
Ben
