hi all have had the 400 for just over a week now, purchased second had and delivered by truck. got the bike started after it arrived and decided to have a close lok over it be fore i hit the track with it oil and fliud change over. the bike is has been set up for racing with all non essential road items removed. i removed the fairings flushed the brakes checked oil levels and coolant levels and since then it refuses to start. i have checked fuel pump, cleaned the contact point on the fuel pump and all tested ok. have metered out primary and secondary windings on both coils all in spec have tested pulse coil generator all within spec, have checked diode associated with sidestand and neutral swithces all ok all fuses ok including main 30 amp fuse fuel pump relay tested ok, have drained fuel tank and cleanned filter, have drained carbies via drain screws, regulator rectifier has a hot spot on the centre ac connection.
i plan to check the altenator output tomorrow.
would like to know if the regulator rectifier would be creating the situation. i am hoping it is a switch that is shoted out somewhere, as the sparks on all cylinders appears weak.
any further info on items to test would be greatly apprieciated.

You've checked almost everything, so you've narrowed it down some what already.
Couple of things popped into my head,
1. Bad earth, but I would expect no spark rather than weak spark.
2. Knackered spark plugs. Have you got a fresh one you can test the spark with? These little buggers don't take to knackered plugs (even bad plug gaps can cause probs)
3. Buggered reg/rec and a fried battery. Although it sounds like the bike is ticking over and it won't be that, your reg rec shouldn't affect starting, only battery charging from what I know.
4. Check you haven't kinked a fuel hose or crushed a wire on assembly.

thanks greggo
have checked the earth which i believe is the terminal under the reg rec
the plugs that i tested the spark with were new but the the ones in the heads are iridium and were in the bike when i got it
the fuel line is sweet and i have tested the flow at the connection to the carbies.
have ordered a new reg rec from hong kong through ebay the one with a heat sink on the back $50au compared to $280 from the dealer.

I'd got with a flat or buggered battery for a check too.
Reg rec missing will still alllow the bike to start. You need air, fuel and a good charge for sparking

i have been using the car battery to jump start, with no luck. Would a dodgy battery in the bike still effect the starting whilst jump starting.?

I would reckon it would cause issues if the battery was dead. If you can jump it off a car battery and then once this is disconnected the bike dies, then this would point at the battery.
See what voltage the battery has with the bike off, then measure it as you try to turn it over, If it drops significantly then it is toast. It should have over 13V just sitting there...

it just cranks over on the car battery but fails to start. it only gives a back fire now and then some times a pop down through carby no.4

this weekend i intend to pull out the plugs and place some fuel directyly into the pots to see iff this gets a fire out of the old girl this may prove carbies as the area of fault!!!!!!!
