Do we have any electronics experts in the house.
I am looking at replacing the coils on the bike. At the moment there are a set of FOUR coils of an R1 Model Number : F6T558
in good nick selling on ebay.

Now the FZR requires 1.8 -> 2.2 ohm primary winding and 9.6 ->14.4K ohm secondary winding
the coils off the R1 are 1.19 ~ 1.61 Ω primary winding and 8.5 ~ 11.5 kΩ secondary winding

There is also a pair of dyhatek DC2-1 1.5 ohms primary 14,000 ohms secondary

Am I correct in thinking that a lower resistance coil will be OK on the fzr
or does it have to be spot on ?

Hi Buzzawak
The resistance look very close to each other so stand a very good chance of working.
Looking at how narrow the tolerance are for the R1 coils I would put this down to better manufacturing processes they have now from 20 years ago.
Give it a go and let us all know how you get on!!

Are you saying there a 4 coils to 1 set on an R1 ???

Best to stick to a 2 coil set, ie it has two HT leads from one coil, they spark at TDC and BDC. Look for any Yamaha about 600-1000cc and they'll be about right.

The coils are in the spark plug caps. The seller believes they are from a r1

Stick Coils no don't try to fit those ... you want something like these

I have been tempted to try this, but I couldnt decide if it was best to connect the R1 coils in series or parallel. Also there is a risk of blowing up the FZR cdi if it is not happy about the different resistance. Also you will need the the plugs from the R1 wiring loom, to be able to connect your FZR ignition wires to the coils. Let us know if you try it.

Thanks guys for the input.

It has been brought to my attention that the stock system is designed to feed one 1.8 ohm coil at a time (7.8 amps @ 14v); switching to the R1 coils mean feeding two 1.2 ohm coils, or 23.3 amps. The FZR entire charging supply is only 19 amps, including lights, fan and horn! The R1 puts out just over 32 amps, and that's with all-LED lighting!

So its a big NO WAY !

I was reading somewhere of a mod by using ford coils which writer said gave him a smoother idle.
It seems that the stock coils are a bit weak.
