excellium fuel could it screw a fuel pump up?

So my FZR4's big brother, my FZ750 which has been running like an absolute dream of late had a tank brimmed full of excellium as a treat this morning. Next thing I know, it's running like a dog. after 120 miles and a 1/3rd of a tank of normal juice added to try and dilute it, it was still getting worse.
when I got home, whipped the tank off to find the fuel pump was screwed, no clicking, no action at all - a good fuel pump was connected to prove that there was current running to it, which there was. It had only been running because the fuel level in the tank was higher than the float height in the bowls (a la thunderbike steve at snett!)
So question is this - would a 20 year old fuel pump yield simply because of the different fuel? I'm guessing not, but it was a hell of a conincidence....I only filled up with it because I had heard a whisper it had some decent fuel system cleaning detergents in it and my carbs had been stood for years.
Next question, I'm pissed off with buying 20 year old fuel pumps and watching them curl up and die within months - it's time for me to buy one of those Facet solid state ones for about £30 - they run from 1.5 to 4psi - does anyone know what pressure the standard pumps run at? I'm guessing the float valves mean the carbs will seal once the bowls are full anyway, so the pressure must only be to lift the fuel up to the bowls once the fuel level drops.
Any experience in making this change would be appreciated, if not I'm the guinea pig!
