Odd gearchange...

Post by VFR..Al »

Just recently when out on the NC30 i am struggling to change gear.I have had the bike about two months now and when i first got it the gearchange was very smooth.

I have noticed that the first four gears seem ok but when i am giving it some and go to change up into fifth or sixth the gear lever moves up ok but then nothing happens it doesn't change up and almost feels as if there are no more gears and can take four or five goes for it to change up.

Also just recently i have noticed that the lower gears have become very notchy...almost like the clutch is'nt working or i'm trying to change without the clutch!!

I have checked the chain tension and that seems fine....i hope my gearbox aint knackered...any help would be appreciated ;)

Its a longshot but maybe its the linkage that needs adjusting? You can unscrew a bolt and change the angle.. maybe its to high at the moment?

i would throw an eye on the linkage too. the way you need to adjust it so that when you have your toe underneath it, it is in firm contact with your boot. with the way the body is set up, the range of movement available at the ankle for going up through the gears is limited with the knee bent, so minuscule changes have profound differences.

When was the old last changed?

Check your clutch cable tension as well, if its too loose you arent using much clutch.. if youv been riding it hard for a long while then the plane plates in the clutch may have warped slightly or their splines have notched a bit making the clutch grab, but i seriously doubt this or other major gearbox damage would have happened in 2months.. Theres other things that can wear in that gearchange system, namely the selector pawl assbly or selector forks which can bend.. Prob not that serious tho, also check on the gearchange linkage that when its kicked up the foot peg doesnt contact the forward adjuster nut thing of the linkage

You can also get mental and swap it over to race shift and then you are guaranteed to be able to stomp the gears home.

If you don't fancy that then make sure the dots line up on the end of the shaft and the linkage.

I had issues on TDs with it jumping out of gear and went to race shift to make sure I got a solid change and it now stays in
