The honda vfr400 nc24 gear lever is not made any more and there is non to be had on the bay. I found one but it is an nc21 so hope it works the same?!?!?!?. Its the only one option I have so wish me luck. The new engine is coming on great I BOUGHT A GASKET KIT FOR £75 and all four pistons and rings for £350 but the tools are the expensive part. Does anyone know the knack to honing the piston lining???????? It seems very tricky. I have ordered all the bolts and bought new bearings and crankshaft as well as all new gear cogs and transmission.I have put an in line fuel filter to be safe and got a new diaphram for the fuel tap. The engine its self is pretty much on spec put I highly recommend the pastigauge kit for oil clearances and a good set of vernier gauges and micrometers as well as valve spring compressors. As a lot of the engine was okay but i have checked everything even sent the cams to piper to see what they can do The engine is still not fully dismantled but am on my way if anyone needs questions please ask. The exhaust gaskets have been replaced and a custom exhaust system has been fitted to get better flow so if anyone needs parts just ask okay guys

The cylinder need to be honed with a proper machine, not one of the drill mounted jobbies.

You need to ensure that you don't have the cylinders honed to a larger size than the maximum piston to cylinder clearance. Preferably as tight to the min necessary.

Don't hone it yourself unless you have precision equipment.

I've honed side-valed lawnmowers in the past but i'd never dream of working on a bike engine.

NC21 gear lever will work fine.

How much are you spending on this engine

How have you changed the exhaust? The flow on the standard one is pretty good, bar the stock end-can.

The engine should be split Left / Right as opposed to Front/Rear like the NC30 is due to differences in firing order if your doing a 2-2-1 as opposed to the 4-1 system thats already on it.

Taking your advice NEO going to get it honed by a professional. But holly shit parts are expensive for it it is going to take a lot os time as I am still buying all the tools. Even they aint cheap!. But looking forward to geting started I have taken off my original honda fairings the red, white, blue and black ones and replaced them with repsol ones until I smooth and fix all the cracks and scuffs then give it a respray, The repsol ones are looking damn good though. I will take a picture of my bike to show you the work I HAVE DONE. I bought a new fuel cap but the screw holes dont line up so cant get it on and it is the right cap for my bike should I drill new holes or is there an easy fix to this???? cheers

It should line up?

Theres only 3 screws that hold it on if I remember rightly, the rest are dummies? Is it rotated the right way around?

Yep parts are expensive.. thats why most people dont' generally bother over-hauling the engine unless there building a race bike.

There pretty bullet-proof until they go wrong so overhauling a running one doesn't usually make a lot of difference (performance wise) to a 2nd hand runnign one... and 2nd hand running engines are cheap to get hold of, i've seen a couple on ebay finish for sub £50.00 recently.. one finished for £20.00 with 1 bid!

I love the NC24 motor but tuning it up is really 'difficult'

The TT-F3 (400 Racing class) HRC parts for the bike are non-existant anymore.

These included jets / needles / cams / complete exhuast system (2-2-1) that exits on left / lower radiator / ignition box / fairings / pistons / con-rods / gaskets

When all of these were fitted the bike went upto around 74bhp (14bhp above standard!)

Since these parts are non-existant now and unless you have a master-class degree of experience in engine tuning (or a bank balance large enough to sink a battleship) your unlikely to get much of an increase in performance.. (barring nitrous / turbo mods)

The ZXR400 on the other hand has oodles of tuning parts available and it's not uncommon to see 80bhp bikes out there. (which is why they perform well at 400 races)

Combined with the fact the ZXR has a better choice of tyres available (160/120 17's) better suspension and better brakes than the 24 it's much easier to tune one of these. (Which is what Im doing)

No question the 24 motor is better, the bike is better built and is of course a V4 :)

It's just after you've spend x amount of money on your engine I'll be surprised if it's any better than one of my 24's (59.4 bhp 28lb-ft of torque)

And mines never been apart below the rocker box!

You will of course get plenty of experience in messing about with the bottom end of the engine :)

Its a pity you cant put video on here just put one on ebay of her so if anyone wants to check my baby out then its under "HONDER VFR400 NC24 FOR SALE" ............... But she aint for sale I just want to see what if anything i get offered and I am putting another video on riding it soon as it stops lashing down. I know there are still a few things needing attention so please dont put it down as a lot of time and love has gone into her. I am now doing up the honda red, white, blue and black fairings so I can interchange them when it suits. The blue flame could not be fitted as I need it welded on cause the original has been joined at the collector box unless someone knows gadgets for fitting. Also got new carb rubbers as these ones are starting to flake and tare. Anyway I hope you like and keep in touch guys cheers for EVERYTHING. One guy on another site opened up one of these cdi boxes from hong kong that cost £75 and all it was, was a resistor??????????? So good advice guys cause I was close to buying one so glad I listened to you all. Peace Iain

So NEO you cant get those HRC parts anywhere now???????? Or do you know a way to make upgrades through other hondas???? Pity they stop making things for the NC24 as its a stunning bike and to be honest the only one I like and they are the best 400cc out there even over the NC30 as I looked at one yesterday and did not like it compared to the 24. If anyone knows a guy with access to HRC parts then please tell. Cheers

Ooh I think that statement will upset a few people on here :-)

Did you ride the 30?

I really do prefer the newer Chassis / Brakes and Suspension setup from a racing point of view, the NC24 does give a nice ride though :-)

I'm currently investigating the possibility of fitting an early CBR900 16" front wheel into the NC35 as I like the quick turning of the NC24 due to the 18/16 wheel setup.

I prefer the NC24 motor hands down, not overly keen on the 360 motor from the NC30/35.

The NC24 is more growly, like a smaller VFR750 :D

Nope parts not available, there were a limited set made in 87/88... Plus you'd be literally looking at around £12,500+ if you were to buy everything from the catalog.

Lings still lists all the parts if you do a parts lookup but nothing is availble.
