Memoirs of a motorcycle mechanic.
USE SAFETY GLASSES
To remove lower bearing.
1/ Use a large lever to pry the bearing cage off. All the rollers will fall out as you do this and it is easy.
2/ Use an angle grinder to grind a flat (only ONE) on the bearing ring from the top to almost the bottom. You can't go all the way down or you risk hitting the lower fork crown clamp with the grinder. You should leave the ring about 2 mm thick. That way you have no chance of hitting the stem with the grinder.
3/ Use a cold chisel to crack the inner ring. It is not too difficult as the bearing steel is quit brittle.
4/ Ring can be pulled off easily.
To install new Bearing.
1/ Pack with grease.
2/ Place on stem and square up.
3/ Invert the old ring cracked ring and slide down onto the top of the new bearing. It makes the perfect drift because it is the perfect size.
4/ Use a piece of pipe that fits over the stem and strikes the inverted old inner ring to tap the new bearing into place.
Your done!
