called in at my local Yamaha dealer (Arnold's in Burton)
and they quoted £8ish per shim and 2/3 weeks to get them in

ill break the spanners out (when I get chance ) and see what I need

Kawasaki and Suzuki;maybe even Hond...........agh use the same shims.Just quote the shim size and thickness

Try another dealer,he is taking liberties with both price and availability.

The seller will more than likely have bought shims in bulk or be splitting up a kit and selling individually.

A quality measuring device is advisable when doing this job just to double check the original and replacement shims.
Most cut their feelers down to enable an easier fit in the head also.

unfornutately Baldy Junior Mk1 has just (as in last week but only told us last night )
lost his job, which means as everloving parents we need to keep him solvent

so the resto is a bit limited till next month:

oil & filter change, valve clearnances, fuel filter, alarm and road tax.

bugger.

That may work in your favour;it gives time to source any major parts/ask questions and you can still do the prep work; like penetrating oil on corroded bolts and removing/wirebrushing/laquering /copperslipping of fixings etc.
Refurbing small parts rather than replacing; you get to gel with your mount!
When you come to do any major works;the ancilliers with remove in a flash.
A real old famer's saying is "Leaning over the gate and looking at the state of things saves a lot of work"
Old bikes are the same; contemplating what has to be done can save a lot of grief rather than charging in like a bull in a hurry.
Dont limit your searches by only looking for fzr 400 stuff,loads of parts are interchangable.

You'll need need some feeler gauges ... metric.
I wouldn't bother with an alarm, they're more trouble than they're worth. Put a lock on the bike, maybe one with an alarm apart from that spend the money on a torque wrench - you need a lightweight one for the cam journals I think they're 11nm (check that). It's a light torque because the cams are being pushed up against the bolts by the valve springs. Buy a "good" torque wench, this is a lifetime tool have a look at Teng / Britool or Norbar

As boris says dont buy an alarm unless you can keep the bike on an optimate charger all the time otherwise they just drain the battery.

Bike security is more about multiple layers;the more the thief has to do the less he likes it
but you have to do some work too.
Alarms tend to go wrong at the most inopportune times and places esp. if immobilisers are involved.
If you are a handy electrician; rig something with a mercury switch that draws virtually no power.
The red flashing LED is the important bit,visual deterrants put off a lot.
See what the Ins. Co. say;it might be a stipulation.

as the bike will be used daily im not fussed about any battery drain and I have 2 rather hefty chains, plus the gate is padlocked at night.
might sound like overkill but we live just off quite a busy road, I never leave any bikes on the road overnight, only takes two burly criminals with a van and your ride is gone

aaand as expected ive had zero time to get anything done with the FZR

never mind, plenty of time till next payday

(as a side note, if anyone spots a black lexmoto vixen 'flying' * down the a50 between uttoxeter and derby with a clearly frustrated idiot in the saddle, give us a wave
