It is the laws of gravity that are stopping you removing the rear shock with just a paddock stand....not us. The whole weight of the bike is still being transmited throgh the shock to the swing arm when it is on the padock stand, all that is isolated is the rear wheel....hence using the padock stand to change the rear wheel.

Best option by miles. -Just go and by an Abba stand. not chaep but will pay for itself 100 times over very quickly...plus you can just sell it on when you get board.

2nd choice - string the back of the bike up to the raftters

3rd choice - use axel stands under the rearsets (or under the frame by the rearsets). NOTE you will need to work "Carefully", "Patiently" and "Methodicaly" (look them up in a dictionary) while the bike is like this as it is not particularly stable and could well come crashing down if not treated with due respect.........

Following on from that idea....how about just fliping it upside down like you used to do with your pushbike

okay i got the bike to support etc. BUT i cannot get the top bolt out of the linkage. got the bottom one out, but the top one is stuck there solid. and it will not move.

what can i do to remove this? heat it?



top one, i even cut my allen key so its just straight, plugged it in 8mm socket and to the socket wrench, and still will not move... i also prayed lots of shock & unlock.. no help.

Xilvia, get a webcam going the next time you are out doing maintenance on your bike. We would all like to watch...and be sure to post your addy so we know where to dispatch the ambulance.

Thats what i used when i removed mine this weekend. The right tools for the job...invaluable. I;ve built my tool collection up over the last 10 years and strangley enough jobs have got easier and easier....not a coincidence.

As above, Twat it with a hammer but its likely the weight of the swingarm is putting stress on the linkage making the bolt seem tighter than it is. Hold the hub with your left hand moving the swingarm up and down slightly while tapping the bolt with a hammer.

Once the bolts are out the swingarm will drop (at the rear) so have something to support it handy.
