Yamaha reg recs are actually quite reliable ... I think this is the second one I've heard of on the forum. Different to honda ones which are rubbish ... people make such a fuss over honda but you'd have thought they'd have got a calculator out and added that one up right.

Re: BACK FIRING AND BLACK SMOKE!! :(
I've had 2 Yamaha reg/rec burn out on me. First one was on my 600, it just started bellowing smoke. Then the 3tj i have just repaired (passed MOT on sat) had a problem with the battery being drained over night which turned out to be the rec.
Maybe im just unlucky???

Re: BACK FIRING AND BLACK SMOKE!! :(
ok, he bought a new reg/rec yesterday for £50 it is a original one by the looks of it.
Battery still dies out only when the lights are being used a fully charged battery seems to die in about 30mins of riding with lights on...
Alternator works fine giving around 49v from 3 tests.. which i think is about right?
Surely the reg/rec could not have burnt out already?
The bike currently has no indicators? would this have something to do with it as it has all the connections still but not plugged in...
Thanks for the offer of sending one over with the fins for a pint or postage mate.. Might have to take you up on it if this one doest work!

Re: BACK FIRING AND BLACK SMOKE!! :(
thats about right...............it should be 50 volts but 49v will do.w00dzy wrote:Alternator works fine giving around 49v from 3 tests.. which i think is about right?
i had similar problems with my nc30,the battery would get charged so long as i didn't use my lights, but if i used the lights the battery would drain faster than it was getting charged.
my charge rate @5000rpm was maybe just over 13volts.
i tested my alternator and the output was 30 volts on all three and when removed it was badly burnt out.
what is the charge rate at the battery at 5000rpm without lights?

Re: BACK FIRING AND BLACK SMOKE!! :(
so you know voltage is getting to the reg rec from the alternator......w00dzy wrote:it doesnt charge at the battery at all...
and you have replaced the reg rec and still unsatisfactory results.........check the connections between reg/rec and battery, positive and negative wires etc.!!!!!
did you test the alternator output at the connector that goes into the reg/rec?the reason i am asking is just so you know voltage is getting to the reg/rec.

Re: BACK FIRING AND BLACK SMOKE!! :(

sorry for wasting your time peeps

after trying yet another reg/rec which did not work.. we checked the fuse box... a 20amp fuse was literally melted to the box and yes it needed replacing! the battery charges fine now...
feel like an idiot hah...
my mate is pleased its running ok now and can run at night! however the bike is still backfiring with flames.. I guess this means that the fuel mixtures needs setting up.. At our local dyno in caterham called Carbontech they said it will cost about £50 an hour for them to tune it..
Is it easy enough to adjust this ourselves?

out of curiosity, what fuse was it?the reason i am asking is,i did not realise there was one for the charging system!!!!!
