well following your advice I have been out and cleaned the plugs but the thing is still the same. I find it hard to believe the plugs are the problem. The spark is a bit pinkish but is there every time on every cylinder. I remember we used to have a peak voltage meter at one workshop for measuring the voltage coming out of the plug lead, where are you now?
Back to the point I am beginning to wish I had never got this bike now, what a disaster.
Just to sum up the bike was going fine back in Sept after I had done the valve clearance and put the thing back together, then it sat round until last week but was quite dead. I stupidly hooked up jump leads the wrong way round and blew the main fuse. Replaced it, and the battery, and the fuel but it still will not start. It will go for a few revolutions with some easy start but will not pick up and go properly. I have tried another CDI and cleaned the plugs, no good. Checked primary and secondary coil resistance, plus the two pulse generator coils, all Ok according to the haynes book which seems full of mistakes anyway..
Cleaned carbs, no change. more dicking around with plugs and keep at it but i am getting seriously frustrated now.
I will piss around a bit more if no good I am going to wreck it out, bollocks to it. life is too short.

Is it getting fuel? If it is starting on EZ start then something is working right but not going after that. You sure the vacuum hose is on the right spigot?

try it with 3/4 choke, a checked out fuel line and a decently charged battery. The fuses and the CDI etc either work or they don't - none of this partial starting etc.

You can sort it man..

Yes there is plenty of fresh fuel, vaccum tap works fine, all connected OK.
Adding choke completely kills any sign of life as the motor floods so easily. With the CV carbs not much point opening the throttle to try and clear it because the slide stays down anyway...
Battery is new and fully charged. I top it up when it gets flat. Also have a car battery to jump it!
I agree that the ignition should work or not, but the signs are that this is the problem. The carbs are immaculate inside, and you can smelll gas coming out of the pipe, every minute or two bang! I am stumped.

Graeme France has a brilliant deal on plugs right now - £28 for a set...my local shop sells them @ £16 each...

As a gesture of goodwill to my fellow man I can send you some good plugs in the post - if they work - buzzin, buy some and send mine back for my bike

that would be excellent, it would be good to try a known quantity. It could be the plugs I guess. Bloody things. I gave them a really good clean today. I don't know.

I had the battery charging last night and after not too much faffing it burst into life. Can't believe it. It puffed out a bit of gas and crap then cleaned up and is now running spot on.
So Mr CMSMJ1 I will not need your plugs. Thanks so much for that though. I was getting pretty frustrated there, sorry for that. I guess it was just really flooded, bloody thing.
All to do now is finish off fitting the fairings and its back on the road after what has been a monumental amount of fluffing, I bought it in bits.... It seems tiny compared the bigger bikes out there but I like the smaler stuff. The engine does sound really good, I am glad I did those valve clearances. It just sounds so smooth.
