Yes but it's a bit of work, you need to get to the top of the motor to take the cam cover off, so airbox, radiatod and rubber dam off. Then measure the gaps. If the tolerances have closed up the cams and followers have to be taken out the original shims measured and new ones put in then the cams are put back. Finally you rebuild the bike ... it's a lot of work so you pay for the hours of the mechanic.

Another way would be to do it yourself, or do a lot of the work yourself, you seem fairly competent.

Well I've already got the tank, air box, carbs and radiator off at the moment so I could certainly give it a go. I'm sure if I watch a few youtube vids and follow some info from a workshop manual I could attempt it.

Done the valve clearance checks this weekend, looks like exhaust side shims are all within tolerance but intake side will need 7 replacement valve pads. Also spoke to a mobile mechanic on the phone and he suggested that my fuel pump might be knackered. He's going to pop by one evening and test it for me

It's always the intakes. You might be able to swap a few shims around so you don't have to buy so many.

Forgive my ignorance but wouldn't swapping them with the other shims from the exhaust side just make them tighter there instead of the intake side? Can you recommend anywhere best for ordering individual shim pads? Wemoto has them listed for the FZR600 3HE, would they be compatible?

Also do you think while I've got everything removed it's worth replacing the cam chain tensioner for a manual one? Or is that not really necessary?

The shims are a different thickness in each valve so it's a matter of taking the cams out and noting what they are in each valve. Then you look at the tolerance you have and if you can swap some for others .... it's a usually a compromise.
Valve shims are a standard fitting not just between bikes but between manufacturers too, I think they're 7.6 mm dia (don't quote me on that).
The cam chain tensioner will be fine, might be an idea to order a spare tensioner gasket though, they're cheap.
