I've thought for a while that the downpipes could be made in stainless and welded to the exup box - it was done by somebody a while back, they found somebody to make them in a classic bike mag.

i dont want rid of the exup the bike needs it do you think its posible to weld it into an aftermarket pipe

Also i heard the r6 has an exup is there any othe pipe that you could modify or even a chinese copy lol

It is a relatively simple process to cut off the header pipes at the cast collection/exup chamber and then remove the remains of them from the sockets ? (the 1000 units have spigots from the chamber but I think the 400s are the opposite)
Refit the chamber and link pipe plus silencer for alignment.
Then the replacement headers from another more readily available system are bolted on and tacked up.
Whole system is now removed and stripped and the headers are properly tigged up on the turntable.
I think a fellow called "Thatkid" Nate on the USA FZR site does these for the 400 using modified early R6 header pipes .
They are still readily enough available at present not to warrant the time and expense in the UK even for the earlier models.

Some of the combination of materials Yamaha used on bike of this era are bizzare.
The Yzf 750 for example has stainless headers (that stain !) cast type material (same as FZR) collector box and a mild steel outlet pipe.

They have done very well to last so long on machines that were probably intended to have 10 year lifespans at most.

R6 headers are to long and have to be cut and shut.

The 3TJ collector box is stainless, don't know if it's cast though, the downpipes are made square were they attach to it

Right ho Boris; the ones Nate was doing will have been for the US Genesis-them having Exup valves.
The square section may make for easier connection; it could be slit at all corners and the new headers inserted,then closed up wth some heat and then finished.Looks like the downpipes themselves would be the block on this without the services of a good exhaust shop with benders, ferrules and mandrels.
