This is still not running as far as I know.. doesn't run overly rich but it is a strange beast and needs a kicking!!

Zombie thread

So, this motor is now living with me and wants to get sorted, I am going to take the carbs off and clean them up nicely.

I'll see if I can get Craig to do the valve clearances too as they'll probably want a look at.

The bike starts and runs lovely. Just when under full throttle it starts to break down. It does not rev out and makes all sorts of noises.

So....any takers on fuelling or ignition?

Is the air filter OK?

I've just helped strip and clean some carbs, on a suzuki, that would not like reving over 8k (when it did it smoked). It turned out to be the filter. The carbs had been on/off several times before he tried the filter.

Just a thought.

I'll check it out. Sure he has fucked about with it in the past too.... standard bits for the win!

Use some known working carbs on it first - hopefully that will give a place to start.
Check the EXUP is opening and closing - or disconnect it just to try.

Have a look at the side stand return spring and cut out switch - bridge the switch.
Has somebody butcherred the speedo restrictor ... the symptoms are almost like the CDI's cutting the sparks, maybe somebody tried to cut the disc in the speedo ?

have you checked the exup valve,
if it's stuck shut or not opening fully then it's a bit like putting your hand over the end can at high rev's it'll fart, pop, bang and make allsorts of strange noises, and it's fairly easy to eliminate

i doubt both coils have gone down at once (could do, but unlikely) so swap em over and see if it makes a difference

valve clearances is another job worth doing and could be your hot starting/high rev running problem

and as every one has said these TJs are a bit fussy when it comes to airbox and carbs, i'd check to make sure you have standard jets in the carbs and a decent air filter

have fun ;)

Im having the same problems but with idle. Mine gets stuck between 1-2 thousand revs and you can give it full gas and it wont even move or stall!. My mains jets are 100 and 50 i have no idea if thats right. Luckily i managed to get myself a second hand set of carbs so hopefully that will cure my problem.
