sharpey wrote:just a note when you have the multi-meter and are doing the charging check at 5000rpm make sure u have the lights on and on main beam and as stated u shud get 13.5-15volts
this test does not need to be done with the lights on,especially full beam.
as sharpey say's,and as i said in an earlier post you check the voltage @5000rpm......13.5-15volts
make a note of what the readings are and post them...then we can go from there

its 12.42 starting.. then when reving at around 4-5k it goes down to 11.55 and slowly drops..
so would this mean it is the reg rec?

Sounds like the generator is not giving any juice for the regulator to rectify...
bad arrows..

is the 12.42 volts before you start?
what you need to do now is test the ac voltage output of the alternator now!!!!!
if this gives you good results then replace the reg/rec
my money is on a goosed reg/rec,more times than not a alternator on it's way out would still maybe give enough power to give you say......12.7-13volts @5000rpm.
to test the output of the alternator:find the connector that comes from the alternator and disconnect it.switch the multimeter to ac volts at least 100 range.start the bike and with it idling at 5000rpm test between two of the three white wires(yamaha i think)and take a note of the reading, then swap a probe over to another white wire and so on until you have taken three seperate readings.all readings should be at least 50 volts and all the same.
if this shows good results then i would suspect the reg/rec to be definately faulty.

ok, we have now checked the wires coming from the alternator which is fine.. so it must be the reg/rec..
we finally managed to find the reg/rec which was underneath the fuel tank!! and was suprised to see it didnt have any fins on it? think they usually do to aid cooling..
does anyone have one they are willing to part with for little cash...?
thanks again for the help and advice..

these reg rec usually depend on dissipating heat through a good earth.
what results did you get from testing the alternator?did you test it?
i previously said that it sounds like the reg rec but it is always better to make sure as they are not cheap.
