well, still poking around today, and have spark again. not quite the fat blue spark as described in the haynes manual, but both rear are consistently sparking now.

not sure what the difference would be, have unplugged and replugged pretty much everything, and redid the two coil grounds.

The loom ground is up front on left side near the ignition coil.

You say that the reg/rec has failed but have you actually tested the output voltage of the stator? If memory serves me correctly you should have around 70v phase to phase.

I went back and retested the reg/reg per magg's prior comment. Using the diode function, it at least seems to be ok in that regard. Not sure why Hayne's would recommend an inappropriate testing method for it.

I have not tested the stator output yet.

Did you check the loom ground connection near the front ignition coil. What specifically did you do to reground the two ignition coils.

Ignition coils were removed, disassembled and reassembled, then hit the ground lugs with a scotchbrite dremel attachment to clean them up

If you mean "by ground lugs" you are referring to the area around the mount bolts, they have no electrical function. Perhaps when you removed the TCI from its box you "improved" the connections of the two plugs/sockets or disturbed the soldered connections inside the TCI. Are the TCI plug/socket connections good. Bad soldered connections inside the TCI for the plug connector wires is possible. Would need close visual examination to identify or simply re-solder all wire connections.

well, dang. Had always assumed those were grounds, but was mistaken. Feeling less confident about any improvement that might have been made from my fiddling

Someone on this forum may have a replacement TCI. Alternatively if the issue was poor TCI plug/socket connection, disconnecting and reconnecting a number of times could improve the connections by further removing any surface contaminant.
