"Is he in the colonies then .... opps, sorry ... are you in the usa ?" OH no! I've been found out. Living in the colonies with a very strong Southern accent, but I still ride British iron, and my best mate is from South London, who is married to a German, so I feel very "international".
Importing a crank from overseas is not an issue with me if that is where I have to get one. I can only assume that they are available in later model engines here also. I just need to figure out the model designations of both engines to match the alternator ends. I feel like such a noob when it comes to FZR/YZFs model numbers ( well, because I am totally new to them). So any help is appreciated.
How about clutch and 2nd gear issues. When did Yamaha overcome these issues?
Hunter, here is a link to a capacity calculator to figure out any bore and stroke you're wondering about.

Get ahold of Steve at Speedwerks in Delaware. He built my 489 as well as others and will be able to give you hard info from race experience with that motor layout.
I've wanted to EFI my machine as well, done a bit of research on how to adapt the first gen (03 to 05) R6 system but haven't had the time or spare funds to actually attempt it. I'd be happy to share my notes/theory/urls of interest on the topic.
On the flip side, I also want to talk APT into building me a rack of 33mm Smart Carbs (evolution of a Lectron single circuit carb) so I can skip having to worry about the plumbing and wiring involved with EFI... so it's likely my rack of FCRs will continue to stay in service for awhile. :D

I looked at Speedwerks website today. I'll call Steve this week for sure. Looks like they have lots of experience.
I'd love to share info on the EFI with you. Wait until I have some info to share though.
Evil, you and I are alike. I've been to Miami once too!

After visiting the test thread 5 times I finally figured out how to post a picture. This is me at Maxton, NC early in a record run of 130+mph on a 1979 Triumph T140 (750cc).

It came from the factory rated at 49HP. With bigger carbs, less exhaust, better ignition, the dyno showed 56HP. Dropped the rear sprocket from 46T to 40T and it would still jump going into second.
