Re: derestricting the 3tj ignition
Personally i think the best mod to do is to trim back the limiter tab on the speedo so it limits at a speed like 240km/h instead of 180. That way the bike will never reach said speed and the limiter will never cut in. This is effectively the same as fitting a kmh/mph converter but it doesn't cost anything.
No need for an m-max or posh moto box then.
Oh and i'll be doing more cdi tests in the new year on the 3tj. This time i will have a decent end can on the bike so it should work a bit better with the 'kit' ignition.

The thing is if you ride a road bike you want the speedo to read in MPH. You can put a sticker on the speedo but you need to know its accurate otherwise you'll always be worried when you see a speed camera.
For this a kmh > mph converter is the easiest solution the sweep of the needle isn't really a problem.
If you have a track bike you might want to junk the speedo or fit a different one so the M-Max box is probably what you want. This will keep the side stand cut out and fuel reserve.
Race bikes without a speedo or need of the start protection circuits are better having the cdi doctored.
Obviously you can use a combination of any of these but you only hit the restriction at 112mph or slightly higher so you're illegal on a road anyway. The biggest drawback is if you try to remove it yourself and mess it up, then the cdi will limit to 12.500 rpm in all gears

Re: derestricting the 3tj ignition
So the Jap spec bikes are just limited to 112 mph? and only 6th gear is governed to 12500rpm? I can live with that but i thought the jap spec bikes were restricted to 53 bhp as opposed to 59?

After 1987 (I think, there's a little leeway there) Japanese bikes were limited to 180km/h which is 112mph. If you remove the speedo wiring then they'll only rev to 12,500 in all gears- bloody annoying on a track bike! You either need to mess with the CDI, fit an M-max/POSH box or mechanical speedo convertor to get around it (or mess with the insides of the speedo and trim the tab back).Drunkn Munky wrote:So the Jap spec bikes are just limited to 112 mph? and only 6th gear is governed to 12500rpm? There was also a later (1990-something) power limit which really hamstrung the 250 2Ts and 400 diesels.

Re: derestricting the 3tj ignition
There was a factory agreement to limit outputs to 55 (?) later in production. I think it affects the 2 later SP models but not the 3tj02 SP, which should be about 59 hp

And is that power limit restriction in the cdi?

It could be. I'd have thought simply lowering the rpm redline would do it, maybe setting the carbs rich.
You better just get rid of that bike its been nothing but trouble ...

Re: derestricting the 3tj ignition
Bendy on here deresticts 3tj cdi's for a resonable amount ,rev limiter at 15400 and a lot cheaper than a bdk or kit cdi had 1on my 3tj rrsp for 4yrs racing with no probs
