I managed to take the tank off, but couldn't find a way of disconecting the two fuel lines  and I couldn't raise the tank more than 20 cm with them still attached. I don't want to give in and let someone else do it because then I won't fell like I've acheived anything, despite resloving the issue. Any advice would be much appreciated

Diconnect the fuel lines from the fuel tap along with the vacuum pipe. They will only be held in place by either jubilee clips or squeeze clips.

OK when I removed one of the fuel lines petrol started to come out, crapped it, and shoved the lines back on

I'm having the 33 bhp kit taken out and carbs given a proper clean out soon, so I think for now I'll just ask the mech to do the rings as well.

I'm not gonna just pass it on to someone else tho, gonna ask him if I can tag along so I can see what he's doing and maybe help out :D

Have another piece of line ready along with a suitable container and when you take one line off, whack the other one on and drain the fuel into your container. Sorted!

Ah, but nay.
Fuel shouldn't come out of the tap unless it's on primer (pri). When in "On" or "Res" position, there sould only be the fuel left in the pipe coming out (just a dribble). If fuel is coming out in the on or reserve positions, the tap's probably buggered.
If it's on primer, that's why your having problems with it running!!!!!!!!! Although it shouldn't run much at all then!
Also, there should be four pipes coming out from the bottom of the tank, one on the offside by itself, and three connected to the tap. Another reason to bad running!
Hope this helps.

Has the GK76 got more pipes than a GK73 then? What does the 3rd pipe do, 1) Fuel, 2) Vacume, 3) :?:

Fuel tap was in the "on" position and always is, used to run it on PRI but got told off by a mech lol.

All four pipes were there and connected as should be (until I removed them). I moved the tank (still connected) to the side to get to the plugs but that was almost impossible with a hive of cables and pipes!

I've booked tuesday to go with the mech and he's gonna show me what he does so I can learn more, quite chuffed cos I feel a bit lost without help.

Thanks for all the advice so far and I'll keep posted with what happens and If I need to ask any more info

Just a quick update:

So we got the carbs out yesterday and gave them proper clean, there was some filth in there!!

Replaced 2 out of the 4 O-rings, as I did not have all the sizes, and replaced the float bowl gasket, but it looks like I'll be needing new jet holder gaskets as well.

The idle screws and float heights were all out, and not all at the same height. So the idle screws we corrected and we tried the suggested float height of 20.4mm.
After resealing the float bowls and doing a quick test, petrol poured out the bottom....basically taking a lot more fiddling and getting the float height to what appear to be right.

Put the carbs back on and added a petrol line to turn the engine....not the best result as it idled too low which suggested the float height was too high.

I had to leave the bike at the mechs last night and now I'm going to order new jet holder seals and let him work out the rest. It's taking longer thant I had anticipated and for a first bike is turning out to be very exspensive, but I'm gettin there.
