to be honest- ive never used a mulitimeter before as electronics arent my strongpoint... but this doesnt sound too difficult- ill give it a go.
will borrow my mates charger and give the battery a charge too- see where things stand after that.
at worst, new alternator is only about £60

update-
well, she's starting- albeit sluggishly...
i think i might have lucked out here and its just my battery needs a charge...
fingers crossed eh?
still having those odd flat spots though... only at 1/4 throttle at low revs...

if it happens again give me a shout,i have a spare multimeter i will send you for the price of postage.
a good indication to see if the charging system is working at all is put the lights on and when you give the bike a bit of throttle the lights should brighten up slightly.

ive not noticed the lights brighten up.. but will check it later to see if they do...
