Good job and good question! In short, no, it is not really necessary. Check the O-ring for any wear or any visible damages before fitting it back. Before fitting use a small tip of new fresh oil and smear it on the O-ring before putting it all back together on the engine. If it then does leaks afterwards, then yes you still can renewal the O-ring. Simple job. In case you have ordered new one, then I would suggest simply fit the new one, it's only a couple of pounds.

Having already ordered new rocker cover gaskets (my rear is knackered) and new coolant drain washers (at about £2.75 each!) and even a new sump plug washer, I was going to skip on this inspection cover O-ring. The old one looks fine - and as you say, it's an easy enough job to do later, if I have to. :peace:

So if my bike has been lowered at the front, that clip won't sit where it's supposed to?
Correct

Thanks. It's only taken me 18 months to spot it...

Most parts are sadly not cheap, but sometimes better get the wallet out and buy genuine parts to replace.
A new sump plug washer is only 50p, I always replace it whenever I need to take the oil drain sump plug out.
