good mod...i did this ages ago! no valving either but much better than standard! small amount needed filing from the lower undertray mounting nut on the frame...2mm from the back....all fits in a treat and only needed the top shock mount filing 2mm too....i did the shock and left the frame standard. Th e only thing was the brake line holder needed removing....no biggy

Just to let anyone know who is thinking of doing this mod, Ive just been on the bmw s1000rr forum and bought a unused shock from a 2009 bike for £40 posted to me. I havent received it yet but Im hoping he is genuine, and I know there is at least 2 other members looking to get rid of their shocks.

How long was it compared to standard shock? Standard is 305mm.
What did it do to the rear ride height?

I think it's the same length as the nc35 shock (315mm) but I'm not completely sure. Could depend on the year.

It may be a few mm longer but the ride height is not much higher. You'd be hard pushed to notice the difference I think.

Never mind what I wrote earlier.
I think the standard s1000rr shock is 315mm until 2009 or 10 and 305mm after?Laying a few misconceptions to rest...
The standard shock length on an NC30/35 is 305mm, not 315mm.
315mm is the length we commonly specify for an aftermarket shock. The 10mm increase when multiplied up by the shock linkage ratio raises rear ride height by around 35mm - this improves cornering clearance and sharpens the steering to just nicely on the quick side of neutral.
If more is good, lots more is not better! A 330mm shock will give a ride height increase of around 75mm and far too much oversteer for comfort - it will make your bike very twitchy, prone to unsettling tankslappers and likely to tuck the front end and dump you in the ditch on tight bends with marginal grip (i.e. almost any `A` road roundabout in the wet...)

Although I don't have much to compare it to. I could take everyone on the twistys and was never overtaken on any corners, although the 1.5 mile staight saw the big bikes eat me up! - but I soon had them again :)
I think it's a very worth while mod, but I had to do a little more 'modification' that I was expecting. The shock didn't fit in the top shock mount so a bit of grinding was required.......I took approx 2mm of the shim, then had to very carefully shave a mm off both the top of the shock, and off the shock mount. A mount on the frame required a couple of mm taking off too but nothing drastic. It took about 2 hours to fit in total.
All in all it cost me around £150 for the shock, spring, spring compressor and express delivery, as I was in a bit of a rush to get the bike ready for the track on Saturday. Whether it would be better to save up a bit more and get a 'proper' shock such as a Nitron I'm not sure. But I am very, very happy with the bike as it is now!
The way I see it is that you'll never get a 400 fast in a stright line, so forks, shock and brakes are the way to go. I've got the SP-1 front brakes, stiffened fork springs and the 1000rr shock - although now I need a bit more damping in the front end so a havier weight oil is required.
I'll happily answer any questions if you have anything specific......unfiortunately I was in too much of a hurry to get the shock in to think about documenting with photos.

Did anyone have problems with the stock spring being a larger diameter at one end than the other when replacing the spring? Dropped mine in at Kais to get it swopped over and I'm having to have a shim made as the spring was loose one end because it was uniform along it's length.
