Would like to see you save your money if possible, my suggestions are only intended to help.
If the starter solenoid winding had gone short circuit during the melt down, the diode would have failed as soon as the starter button was next pressed, no winding to limit the current flow. A short circuit solenoid winding would also have given the starter switch a hard time up to the point that the diode failed. With a dud diode the starter solenoid will only function with the clutch lever pulled in. If the starter solenoid does not pull in when you press the starter button with the clutch lever pulled in then the starter button or clutch lever switches may now be faulty.

Had a look at the Japanese version of the wiring diagram I posted, looks identical to the an NC30 so have now up loaded the NC30 version, might help.

Hi Magg
Thanks for the NC30 diagram mate,I had managed to get one like that and tried the best I could to use that as near as dammit to then look at the nc24 one you gave.I gave up when looking for the headlight relay and could not find it beside the clocks(R/H side) or the R/H frame member like the nc30.I had checked the clutch sw and the neutral selector swithes and both are ok. I did not think about testing the starter switch though.
I had the bike picked up on Thursday this week as I have so much on at the moment that I cannot spend any more time on it myself and it now needs an MOT as well.
As I said I really do appreciate all the help on this one and I have managed to help my mate fix his elec problem on his zzr1400 so not all has been lost.

Another update.
The regulator/rectifier had gone kaput,so I had to get another one. But the boys just got home and said when he pulls the clutch lever in the neutral light comes on. I strongly suspect that the clutch diode is the reason for this, Anyone have any ideas where to get one from please .ie david silvers possibly?

If it happens everytime with the clutch switch then yep sounds like the clutch diode is knackered.
Ebay? David silvers? Try searching for users breaking a vfr400 and ask for the diode if it is knackeded. Not seen one go before though.
nc30 uses the same clutch diode.

28 aud for those in aus!
I remember this conversation coming up a few years ago when somebody watned to use a generic off the shelf diode which will probably be under 1gbp.
Honda call it a silicon rectifier or something similar.
6A silicon diode perhaps? Maybe you can find the old topic if you do soem forum searching.
