For what it's worth, I actually rate the mirrors on my NC30 (jap) better thant previous bike (749)....I'm quite tall so not sure if that has an effect...mine appear to be standard. Saw in a magazine recently (Practical Sportsbikes I think) a good idea. Cut some Perspex to the same shape as the mirror mounting and ten use longer mounting bolts to 'spread' the mirrors further apart....might be worth a try!
