found what dymag state to re finnish


Strip coating back to bare magnesium
Conduct dye-penetrant inspection
Apply chemical chromate coating
Repaint
Replace bearings & assemble
Final visual inspection

Only thing that wasnt done to them was the dye inspection, a specialist company did the stripping and coating although it wasnt chromate it was zinc, all i did was the painting. Maybe it was the zinc that has caused it although i doubt it as ive done other mags the same way with no issues.

That is strange , i just worried that its a reaction causing damage to them?

Thats the link ive been trying to find for the past half hour, this guy has been well recomended to me. Use to work for dymag and started out on his own so knows what he doing.

I wouldnt worry about it damaging the wheel. it looks more like a issue with the lacquer

Had a email back about getting them refinnished , its because they have previously been blasted toget the paint off, can be sorted but with costy a min of £200

no thats painted , but i have to have the tyres removed , cost of new bearings and delivery to get them up there.

Im sure the quote is for a base colour so haveing the hrc gold is prob going to be more , i rekon its going to cost around £300 so it looks like the track bike is on hold for the moment .

Luckily i have someone buying the rgv wheels at the end of the month but that was basicly the money to finnish the track bike.

Theres nothing special about the colour and costs no more to buy than any other colour. Colour code is YR502P Golden glow pearl, despite the name its not a pearl paint.

I can't remember what the Mag content is on the dymags, is it quite high?

I hate the ball-ache of old mag-wheels. Lots of painters / poweder-coaters won't do them becuase they can be a pain without the right tools and knowledge.

Never fear though!

Have them DPI'd (Dye inspected) as you can't see some of the tiny cracks by eye.. usefull if you dont' know the full histroy of the wheel.. cracks can be microscopic and it depends how long they've sat with no paint / chips in them.

It does look like a lacuqer to paint reaction though so that shouldn't be too much of an issue to fix providing the wheels are structurally sound!

Never seen one fail personally due to neglect, only crashes, but I wouldn't like to be the first to proove a point aha!

Thats true , i think i will go with the chap whos quoted me , he was a dymag employee for 27 year so i would like to hope he knows what he doing and the stuff on his website looks good.
