Can't get carbs back on :(

Just a couple mental notes.

The carb rubbers are directional and need to be installed in the correct position or you will never get the carbs back on.

Secondly, once you have them positioned correctly. Pop the rear 2 off and using a fine grit sanding drum in a dremel tool and round over the square edge of the rear of the boot. this will help keep them from getting hung up on the edge of the carbs as you are trying to re-install.

Sort of off topic, but since my bike is in bits, if I mount the carbs on the bare engine, will the frame fit over the motor with the carbs attached during reassembly? Seems it would be easier to mount the carbs this way. Anyone?

I have tried several methods before. The best i have is use some 3 in 1 oil on both the rubbers and the carbs themselves. Locate the fronts first and push down, then using two flat bladed screwdrivers lever the back of the rear rubbers and push the carbs down until lightly seated. Then using a hammer with the soft plastic ends that can be replaced, hammer the carbs down lightly until seated properly. The plastic ends on the hammer do end up looking terrible but the carbs are unmarked. This takes no more than a couple of minutes to do and seems to work fine for me. There is a light plume of blue smoke afterwords when starting but clears after 10-20 seconds (excess 3 in 1 being burnt off). A rubber hammer is too heavy and hard for the carbs and will deform or crack the metal. Best plastic type hammers are made by Thor

Thanks for the tips everyone, got them on eventually but had to call a friend over to help, we got the fronts mostly in then used screw drivers on mavouver the back down, then sum gentle tapping with a wooden steak just to get them on nice and tight. Put some GT85 on there too but I'm not sure that made much difference in the end.

Only problem is now.....bike doesn't start. Have I missed something? When I put the carbs back on there was no fuel in them.....would this be the problem? Do I just need to get some easy start to get it going first time or should it have worked after a few tries?

The fuel tap wont let fuel flow int othe carbies until there is a vacuum in the intake.

Disconnect the vacuum hose that runs to the fuel tap at the cylinder end, suck on it then pinch it closed for a minute to fill the carbies up with fuel.

i will have all the fun doing it for the first time on the track nc30 soon , when i will be sticking in some s/s allen screws on carbs. had my nc35 ones off numerous times and are a peach to put on as the rubber jobbies have that groove in em.

getting some for the 30 will be a future investment for me, i think

Best method I found was to use a piece of wood about 2 foot long, one end under the plate up near the headstock, another block placed on the rear of the carbs, locate the carbs in the front two rubbers, use two flat blate screwdrivers to start the rear, then using the leverage from the peice of wood to push the rear carbs into position, will post a pic when I can find the camera/pc cable

Instead of doing the front and back seperatley try the left and right seperatley so left in then push the right in......worked for me and lubricant is a necessity.
