All done and fitted. According to the haynes manual you have to match up the little dot markings on the clamp and spindle. How important is this? When they're matched up, the lever is in a really awkward position. They're not matched up at the minute and it seems to work fine

You then adjust the lever using the rod - thread it in and out to raise and lower the lever...

I tried doing it this way and the rod just seems too long and I cannot get the lever where I want it. Will not aligning the punch markers hurt the gearbox? If it does, I'll look into cutting/shortening the current rod.
But at the moment, not enough of the thread is going into the rose joint at the clamp end and its leaving the lever pointing down.

The alignment dots are to make sure the gear lever is in the right place.

If your using aftermarket ones I wouldn't pay too much attention to the dots as long as you get the lever in the right place.

Marks method is correct but if you can't get the adjustment you need you'll have no choice but to move the linkage around :)

Or buy a spanky titanium rod off ebay...

Or, even cooler, turn the linkage over and get on the race shift like all the cool cats..

I have a race shift (1 up 5 down) on my NC24, much better for positive feeling gear changes :-)

Takes a bit of getting used too, especially when you ride multiple bikes
