flying home from Pakistan tonight, then off to portugal with wife for a week without kids for our 10th wedding anniversary, so hopefully soon after that I'll have the NC back on road

A bit late on the reply, but my 1991 nc30 clutch is extremely easy - 1 finger no problem, and no slipping (fresh new cable). You must have a dry or toasted clutch cable try running some cable lube or triflow down it and grease the clutch lever pivot, should help if you have not done so already.
I couldnt imagine wanting to install a hydraulic clutch when the NC30's clutch is so effortless in stock form..

It causes me so much pain, I almost dropped out of the BMF National rally a few years ago with clutch wrist ache

Its been the same since I got her 13 years ago

I would bet the cable needs a good lube/inspection and possible replacing. Give that a go first.
