400/600 pick up compatability

Post by Stumac »

Can anyone confirm if the 3TJ and the FZR600r share the same pick up?

I broke a pick up on my race bike and didn't have a spare so nicked the one from the 600 lump I have for my hybrid but it didn't work lots of banging and spluttering.
Got another for a 3tj and everything went fine.

Either the 600 pick up works totally differently although it looks similar or the one from my 600 was already bust.

The ignition pick up, the bit that is inside the left hand engine case alongside the generator rotor.

Can't give you a proper yes / no answer but I know the generator is "different" because the generator case is ... different and the wires come out in a different position to the 3TJ

I theory all the pick up does is detect the proximity of the of the raised sections on the flywheel to tell the cdi when to fire. Are the pick ups exactly the same height? However maybe it works on a slightly different resistance so sends a different voltage to the cdi giving a weak signal hence the bad running
Hope that might help

I think Steve if right about the resistance being different on the pickup coils for the 400 and 600.
The 600 is around 280ohm and the 400 is around 100ohm
I had to replace my pickup coil on my 3TJ around 6 months ago and had a hard job tracking one down.
Yamaha only sell them with the generator assembly for around £300
I found a place in the end that make new pickup coils and other ignition and generator parts.
http://www.electrexworld.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They dont list a coil for a 3TJ but I bought there P1 for around £28 it looked like the closest match resistance wise and very close dimentionaly to the P6 coil they list for the FZR 600.
I had to do a bit of adjustment to the fixing holes as this coils holes have a lip on them I had to remove with a file and the hole pitch is a little off. Also the pickup face is 1mm closer to the flywheel so just touches.
I filed this face a little also.
Its still working after 6 months and I use my bike almost every day for my 60 mile round trip to work.

If you need any more info just send me a line
Cant remember what way round I wired the pickup coil to the original loom but I know it only worked one way!
But I did wire it both ways without damaging it so if it dont work one way try the other!
I hope that makes sence.
Also the wires on the coil that I bought were from a batch that had been made wrong. i.e wires reversed.
I had to solder the wires from the loom to the coil as not much space to crimp.
Good luck
Andy
