Caliper seals

Post by buzzawak »

The feel on my front brake lever is rock hard so I guess the seals have lost there rebound and need replacing.
I am looking for a cheap source for the seals kit as I have the 4 piston type. Here in Australia Yamaha wants $43 per seal kit. Each kit has 4 seals so I am told that I have to buy 4 kits to do both calipers. Grand total of $173. A bit rich if you ask me. Anyone know a good source ?

Which calipers have you got ???

If they're the original silver ones then you may as well replace them completely with the later "Blue Spot" type which are fitted onn just about all modern non-radial Yamahas. You might find them slightly cheaper by searching for a less popular model like a Fazer but they'll be similar to the R6 etc. One thing to know is tey have 32 / 34 or 34 / 34mm pistons you only really need the 32/34s but the others are ok too.

Gold 4 piston ones.
They're the standard ones for the bike - The money for new seals would be better going towards replacing them.

Hi Evil, Yes just tosing around the idea of doing the R6 caliper swap. Once again it would be the case of getting them from the USA. Nothing is listed on Ebay aust and the wreckers here would want some stupid amount.

I just did a ebay aust search and not one r6 caliper to be seen. The bike wrecker here over charge for their parts. I think they don't want to compete on eBay.

Anyway last night (3am in the morning) I won two auctions the first for a complete front brake setup off a 04 r6 including the right clipon and controls and the second auction for the left clip on and controls. Total cost including postage from the US $145.00

So I am happy for the moment.

Question: What is the diameter of the 04 r6 fork?

Depends on the year but in either case ... bigger than the 3en1's ... I think the Right way up forks are 43mm.

But the bar will be 22mm (industry standard) so the master cylinder should fit. not sure if the brake lines will be be the right length though.
