You can use high temp silicone gasket maker to replace the side crankcase gasket, enjoy the hassle of scraping off the old one chunk at a time tho...

I'm rebuilding a couple of engines at the moment just awaiting on some gasket sets. If you want a gasket set get in touch with Rick Oliver who sells them for £90 he hasn't any at the moment but will in a couple of weeks. If intrested in an engine let me know and we could come to some arrangement. I would be taking the one out my running bike and swapping with one I have overhauled.

Ok thanks for that i will no doubt be calling on Mr oliver soon. David silver want over 150 for a gasket set... Ouch..

Matt, let us know whats the most feasible route here, new engine or some new internals.. with probably the worst possible engine damage, im hoping you can get some experience from rebuilding the engine, as opposed to just buying a new one

hello again yeah you weren't that far off the price neosophist but that was just for the top engine set. Its another 50 odd for the bottom ouch.

Mexican gringo yeah im defo going to have a go at rebuilding it. Bought a new crankshaft with all four con rods on it from a running bike from this sites own abrmoto from ebay. Nearly finihed the strip down now just the clutch and i think its the alternator on the other side to go and i think i can split the case.. Really determined to fix it as i know its all down to my own stupid fault..

Just to let you know the con rods are marked F and R not really sure which is which!!!!!!!!! :whistle:

Don't forget that with a new crank you will need new crank shell bearings as almost guaranteed the new crank will be different size to the original.
ISTR the haynes manual goes into the details for working out the different sizes from the markings but ideally you should get and use some plastigage.

As the haynes illustrates, the crank lobe number and crank case letter correspond to a particular size, but as fastdruid suggested the only way to be sure theres not too big or small an oil space through wear, is to use plastigauge on each journal.. Also check ring gaps on the pistons. How scratched are the bores?
