520 or 428?

Post by Taggyd »

the 3tj i've got for the road has got a 520 chain, am i right in thinking standard is 428? is there any benefit for the road in having the 520 as the rear sprocket is pretty much dead so i'm going to do chain and sprockets together. its 14f 46 rear at the min.

any suggestions?

cheers

428 is lighter so the unsprung weight is reduced but a 520 will last a lot longer

Swings and roundabouts really

most road bikes 250cc upwards come standard with a 525 pitch chain and sprockets very few come with 520 and some 530 picth most racers will convert to 520 as its easier 2 get different sizes of sprockets in that size etc...

it may be im not sure 2 be honest but i have a 415 picth chain here off a 125 race bike so 428 wouldnt be much bigger than the 415 and i think it would be very small for it 2 be on a 400 i would say standard would probley be 525 most 125cc bikes come with a 520 or a 520 so i couldnt see a 400 coming with a 428.

520 would be your best bet.

428 is standard - it's done to save weight

How do you find out what size the chain is, is it stamped on the side plate or is there a way of measuring it?
