Valve timing marks?
Does anyone have any info on the time valving marks for the gk76a? The mechanic who's doing my bike seems very confused. I obviously have no idea what valve timing marks are, otherwise I would be fixing it myself.

Re: Valve timing marks?
timing marks are normally little punch marks on the ends of the camshafts and the camshaft holders.
You also have marks on the crank chaft - there is usually a cover and this has several marks on it T marks and F marks
Lining these up in certain ways enables you to ensure the engine is at TDC (top dead centre) for each of the cylinders in turn.
If your mechanic cannot sort this then I would not trust the work...You might as well do it, it is not hard and will save you a few quid!!

Re: Valve timing marks?
He's pretty good normally. He wanted to know how many pins back, which I've now discovered is twenty.
The strange thing is that the timing arrow is in a different place on the new engine. On the old one it points to one of the teeth things, on the new one it doesn't.
Any ideas?
p.s. thanks for the help.

Re: Valve timing marks?
Right, another question. If the engine is a year or two later than my original one will the cdi be compatible?

Re: Valve timing marks?
The cdi should be fine as long as you replace like for like. Standard cdi (2 connectors) or SP cdi (single connector)

Thanks. One more question. The valve timing mark on the new engine I've got is in a different place from the old one, i.e. the old one points to a tooth, the new one points further round anti-clockwise between the teeth.
Any ideas why?

It seems I am the undefeated heavyweight spazmo champion of the world!
The mechanic got a new cdi and coils. Started fine, then stopped. He noticed that the padlock key dangling down from the ignition was sparking against the frame.
It would seem that when I changed the engine and replaced the clutch cover I got a wire caught somewhere making the whole bike live. Hopefully this hasn't ruined the new cdi and coils.
Moral of the story. Don't ever let me anywhere near anything mechanical, ever.
