Bike Wont idle

Hi,

I have a 1986 Yamaha FZ400 (japanese grey import) and it wont sit and idle normally! It runs ok for a bike its age, and will happily see me upto motorways speeds and beyond despite being restricted to 33bhp through a custom made kit. It starts fine and will happily sit and run on the choke... but after I take the choke off and the revs dip below 1K the bike cuts out.

During a jolly jaunt from hatfield to croydon today... I lost count of the amount of times the bike cut out from me letting go of the throttle and the revs dropping off... very annoying, especially with angry londoners behind you at the lights!

Any ideas?

Well the quickest thing is to simply turn up the idle rate on the carbs.

Your looking for a small turn screw on the left of the bike (although it could be on the right) they useually have a cross head screw in them as well. wait untill the bike is warm and turn it until you get the idle to change ... you want it a little under 1500. It's a fairly easy thing to do but if you can't find or reach the screw you might have to take the saddle and tank cover off to to see it.

Slight snag in being able to take the tank cover an seat off.... i only have access to one side of the bike as the previous owner managed to round off the fairing bolts on the right hand side... so unless i can find a slightly bigger allen key, or another way of removing fairing bolts then im scuppered on that front...

Thanks for the location of the idle screw Now its just a case of identifying it and turning it the right way....

you can use some "easy outs" on them

They're a left hand thread so as they screw into the damaged head they're unscrewing the bolt

If they are damaged allen bolts,Try a torx bit.It's worked for me.

The heads on these screws are large so a centrepunch on the edge of the head and a anitclockwise tap with a hammer will unscrew it.
