Loss of power and funny noise - HELP!!
Hi,
I was out on the bike today and after about an hour of riding (and nearing the best bit of road
) it seemed to bog down.
Anything over 25mph it sounded like it wasn't running on all cylinders and was kinda making a 'pap, pap' noise! Initially I thought I was running out of fuel but had a quick look and this was fine....so limped back home with the horrible noise and happen to notice the temp gauge and rev gauge had also packed up - is this coincidence??
I have whipped off the fairing and can't see any loose wiring or connectors. It runs fine on tick over..... but also has no neutral indicator light showing now
I'm fairly mechanically minded but don't know my way around bikes very well!
Any ideas or pointers on where to start would be muchos appreciated
Thanks
Tim

Hi Tim,
Have you checked the fuses?

Matchlessman you're a legend!
Just had a quick look and one of the fuses are blown...
Looking at the little piccy thing inside the fuse cover it says 'Tail, Meter, Horn' - would this effect the actual running of the bike??

It shouldnt do so probably you are going to need to investigate what caused the fuse to blow.
Have you had any trouble with flat batteries recently? You could have the start of the voltage regulator dying.

Nope, no problems with the battery...
Could it be carb/air box related??
It seems strange that the gauges/dash light should fail in conjunction with the poor running!
Maybe it was just coincidence and the lose of power is a completely separate issue??

Re: Loss of power and funny noise - HELP!!
i blow the same fuse a few years ago and the bike went into a sort of limp home mode, where anything over 5000rpm and the bike would start missfiring, very similar to when the speedo has been disconnected without an m-max box or anything attached
It's not having what you want but wanting what you've got....Loud ,Proud and Modified ....

It may be that when the dash lights power went then the CDI cannot see the speedo anymore?
Causing limp home?

Royster,
When you had this problem did just replacing the blown fuse sort the problem??
Gonna try and nip out when I'm not at work and grab a new fuse....
I suppose this might be a good opportunity to check the valve clearances and balance the carbs now the bikes completely stripped!

Ok, replaced the fuse and the bike ran fine for the first good razz!
But, now its blown the same one again
I have noticed there is a loose wire that is hanging down from the rear light cluster, it must have got crimped at some point.
Could this be shorting the circuit and blowing the fuse??
