when your doing cylinders 2+4 do you need to turn the engine over so that the mark on the crank case lines up with the t2 mark. only asking this because when i line it up with t1 the marks on the end of the crank shaft do not line up with the marks on the engine, but do line up when i use t2. please help.

Mate you turn till T1 and index on rear cams face up & measure # 1, then rotate clockwise until T1 again, rear cam indexs point down, measure # 3, rotate till T2, index on front cams faces up, measure #4, rotate till T2 again, index on front cams faces down then measure #2..

Re: help im confused
From what I remember. T2 is for cylinders 2/4 alright. Then check the lines on the cam shaft, should point towards the cyclinder head for numder 2. And towards the sky for number 4 with T2 lined up as well. This could be the other way round. Will be obvious which when your doing it any way. Have a read through the haynes manual again just to be sure. It explains it really well.

Re: help im confused
When I done my city and guilds they taught us to sort of ignore the marks as they are only a guide line !
Take the rocker covers off and spin the crank till the cam lobes are facing directly away from the shims/buckets . Most cams have a large ( ish ) area when they are not touching the bucket (off ramp)at all so as long as your pretty close you will be as acurate as the timing marks.
This way as long as you note down a table with all valve clearances then you can't really go wrong .
Same goes for shims, they say what size they are but a double check with a micrometer is helpfull as they do wear as well as your cam ! so just because it says .25 or whatever doesnt actually mean it is still that size !
Shim uder buckets are better as they don't wear but removing the cams and then refitting can be a ball ache ! lol especially if you do your maths wrong and insert the wrong shim !!!
