Fork seals - how hard is it-Parts ?

Post by RichardB »

Is it hard to change the fork seals on RVF 400. Do you need any special tools?

Who is the best person to get new seals, should we be upgrading any valves while we are at it.

What fork oil would you recommend, we live in south west france so it's hotter than the UK.

Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Richard
I have just replaced all the seals and oil in my RVF forks and I have to say it isn't hard. Just remember to loosen all the components before you remove the forks from the bike, you don't want to be clamping them in a vice!
The only thing I would say is get all of the correct size spanners to do the job. The guy who owned mine before obviously used adjustable spanners and managed to round everything off!
many hours with a tig and a milling machine followed

If you are not confident buy a haynes manual and you will see its nothing to worry about
Good luck

No special tools, the only thing that was a little awquard was replacing the guide, drifting it in without damaging it. Take your time, I'm sure you will be fine!
I used the standard 10w oil by the way, not sure if the temp your way would have a huge affect? :peace:

Oh and by the way its a very messy job. Have plenty of clean rags handy and ensure you don't get any dirt inside the fork tubes.
