CDI Keeps blowing

Post by IF77 »

Got an RVF400, usual RLR stage 3 spec, race loom, HRC ign, quick shifter etc & it has now 'blown' 2 HRC CDI's. It doesn't blow them straight away, both times at race meetings. Symptoms are a big loss in power although runs & sounds well. Had it on Mike's dyno @BMC after the 1st one blew & power had dropped to @50 BHP, the CDI was replaced & the power returned, I now suspect the same has happened again, although not had it dyno'd.

Anyone got any ideas what could cause this? Its getting a bit expensive & the HRC CDI's are becoming rare!

Cheers.

Hi, is the regulator putting out more then 14volts? if its too hi that could burn them out i suppose, or maybe even a faulty ignition coil so i'd check the primary coil resistance aswell( sorry i cant remember wat it is).

I don't have any answers for you, but I do have an RVF HRC CDI for sale. I was gonna run it on my VFR with an RVF loom and pick-ups but opted for a different route. PM me if you are interested and I'll send some pics over.

As its a fairly high spec race bike, I'll assume you are running total loss. Is the loom "new"? Is it possible a loose wire in the CDI connector is causing problems?
